About the School

Marantha School opened its doors on October 3, 2010. Founder and director Louicius Prophete started the school to help parents that don't have the ability to pay for more expensive schooling for their children in Ouanaminthe, Haiti, where the government fails to provide all of the country's youth with free public education.

The children that the school serves are extremely impoverished. They have little to no possibility of buying clothes for school, food, and materials. The majority of their parents do garden work at an attempt to harvest produce every few months.

The school serves kids in grades pre-school to 5th grade. There are 135 students. The only income the school has brought in so far to support the teachers, purchase materials, and maintain the school space, is 200 goude from each parent, each year. This is, more or less, $5 US. Imagine running a school on $5 x 135 students = $675 a year!!!

Marantha School's biggest needs are funds to pay teachers a decent salary, to purchase materials to construct desks, and other materials to work with. Ideally, the school would like to pay its teachers 5,000 gourde a month, which is around $150 US. They would also love to provide food for the students, as many of them face severe hunger.
